This is the day that we all started writing. The criteria for our magazine is that they have to be about Opotiki, set in Opotiki or inspired by Opotiki. The writing can be any style: poetry, fiction or non-fiction. The students each spent some time deciding their topics and then began writing. By the end of the first session of writing, our projects were underway which included, a planned interview with a relative and long-time resident of Opotiki, poetry inspired by the beach and ocean, stories set on the beach and even some historical fiction.
The session ended with Des pulling out another impressive looking home-made scientific contraption and using magnetised ballbearings, showed us another visual metaphor about creating impact. As the ballbearings shot off the end it demonstrated to us the power of how a few key moments in a story could build up a reader's enthusiasm for a story. We were all very impressed!
We finished the day and it was the last session of week one. By the end of the next session we hope to be finished a draft so that we can be on track for finishing while Des is here.
