Creative Coaching Residencies Bay of Islands – Rural Residency with Don Long

Saturday and Sunday, March 12–13

I almost caught an octopus for dinner on Sunday after seeing a small tsunami come around Tapeka Point on Saturday – and going to the Kororareka Day celebrations in Russell. (There was disturbed water right off the beach during the celebrations.) I bumped into lots of the kids and teachers (and tried one of the teacher’s mussel fritters and bought lemonade from two of the boys). There are whirlpools in the Kerikeri Inlet, apparently.

I was worried about my niece in Tokyo until an email from her came through.

It would have been fun if the author of Mum’s Octopus could have reported that he had caught and eaten one! It retreated too far up into an underwater hole. I could feel it holding a rock between us, but it was just too far in to grasp.

What a strange weekend, with the terrible events in Japan unfolding.
